Have questions before starting pelvic floor physical therapy? You’re not alone and asking them is often the first step toward real change.
This FAQ page answers the most common questions we hear from active individuals dealing with leaks, pain, pressure, or movement limitations. Our goal is to provide clarity and help you decide if our approach is the right fit for you.
Pelvic floor physical therapy focuses on how the muscles, connective tissue, nervous system, and movement patterns of your entire body work together to support bladder, bowel, sexual function, and efficient movement.
Rather than isolating the pelvic floor, we assess how you breathe, how you load your body, and how your core and hips coordinate during real-life activities. This approach helps us address leaks, pain, pressure, and movement limitations at their root so you can return to an active, confident lifestyle.
No. We work with both women and men.
While pelvic floor concerns are often talked about in the context of pregnancy and postpartum, men experience pelvic floor dysfunction as well. We regularly help male clients dealing with pelvic pain, urinary symptoms, core weakness, pressure, or limitations in lifting, running, or sport. Our approach is always rooted in how your whole body moves and functions, not just your sex or diagnosis.
Not at all.
Many of our clients have never been pregnant. Pelvic floor symptoms can develop from high-level training, heavy lifting, chronic stress, past injuries, surgeries, or simply years of compensatory movement patterns. If something feels off or your body isn’t allowing you to live or train the way you want, pelvic health physical therapy may be appropriate.
Yes.
While we wait for medical clearance before performing an internal pelvic exam, there is a lot we can safely and effectively address earlier. This includes breathing mechanics, posture, core connection, pain, scar education, and nervous system regulation. Early support can make a meaningful difference in recovery and confidence. Are you really ready to work out after having a baby? Here’s how to know.
Internal work is never mandatory.
There is valuable information that can come from an internal assessment, but your comfort and consent always come first. Many people make excellent progress with external assessment and treatment alone. If internal work could be helpful later on, your therapist will explain why and talk it through with you, no pressure, no surprises.
It’s human but it shouldn’t feel uncomfortable or unsafe.
We know pelvic health can feel vulnerable, especially at first. Our job is to create a space where you feel respected, informed, and in control. Sessions are educational, collaborative, and grounded in function not awkwardness. Most clients tell us the anticipation is far worse than the experience.
Your evaluation is a full-body, whole-person assessment.
We look at how you move, breathe, load, and coordinate not just the pelvic floor in isolation. This may include posture, hip and core strength, movement patterns, symptom history, lifestyle factors, and nervous system considerations. Our goal is to understand why symptoms are happening so we can address root causes rather than chasing quick fixes.
No and this is one of the biggest ways we differ from many clinics.
Kegels can be helpful in some situations, but they are not a universal solution. Many people actually need better coordination, relaxation, strength through range, or integration with the rest of the body. Our focus is taking you from foundational pelvic floor work all the way back to running, jumping, lifting, sport, and life.
It depends and we’re honest about that.
Your timeline is influenced by how long symptoms have been present, your current movement patterns, lifestyle factors, consistency, genetics, and overall health. Someone who integrates what they’re learning into daily life often progresses faster than someone relying only on in-session work. We reassess often and adjust the plan as your body adapts.
We are an out-of-network practice.
This allows us to spend more time with you, provide individualized care, and progress you beyond basic protocols. We provide detailed superbills that you can submit to your insurance for potential reimbursement based on your plan’s out-of-network benefits.
Because our priority is quality, not volume.
Insurance-based models often limit visit length, frequency, and the type of care provided. By staying out-of-network, we can focus on education, progression, and meaningful outcomes rather than rushing through visits or stopping short of your goals.
Absolutely.
Most of our clients are motivated, active individuals who want to return to running, lifting, sport, or demanding daily lives without fear. We don’t stop once symptoms improve, we help you rebuild capacity, confidence, and resilience so you can move forward, not cautiously backward. Our approach frequently supports return to impact, lifting, and athletic activity after pelvic floor symptoms. Staying active safely is one of our main focuses.
